SAN LUIS OBISPO, Oct.4 - A new line of tie-dye underwear is getting a lot of attention. It’s called “Hippie Skivvies,” and a couple from the Central Coast designs it.

Two years ago, Karen and Paige Covell decided to gamble on a crazy idea to make tie-dye underwear. Now, their company is taking off. People across the country are buying “Hippie Skivvies” as fast as this couple can get them made.

Karen and Paige Covell say they decided to start their line of "Hippie Skivvies" after their son gave them the idea.

“We decided to just roll the dice on a crazy idea. I figured if the pet rock can make it, which just sits there as a paper weight, something like this would make it,” says Paige Covell, maker of Hippie Skivvies. “It’s going to be a while until we break even, but the way it’s going we’ve gotten into stores from Minnesota to Malibu to Maui to North Carolina. It’s been real exciting so far. I think there’s a lot of promise in it.”

    “It’s been two years of work without pay, and it’s a labor of love right now, in the hopes it will start becoming a profitable investment," says Karen Covell.     Hippie Skivvies come in cotton and a cotton/Lycra blend. They're soft, pre-shrunk and come in men’s and women’s styles.
