TD in the San Juan Mountains

Located in southwestern Colorado, the San Juan Mountains are considered by some to be the largest single distinct mountain system in the U.S. They encompass more than 10,000 square miles and offer an abundance of activities, including everything from skiing, backpacking and fishing to whitewater rafting, mountain biking and rock climbing. The views, as you can see in these photos, are... uh... breathtaking! In fact, these shots were rewarded by our sending TD some free Hippie Skivvies.

TD is climbing in an area near Durango, famous for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Narrow gauge rails are 36 inches apart, while standard gauge rails are 56½ inches, which is a standard based on Roman chariot wheels. Narrow gauge was used because it was easier and less expensive to install around sharp mountain curves. Completed in 1882, the train winds its way from Durango up through a beautiful section of the mountains to the town of Silverton. As you might gather from its name, Silverton used to be quite the mining town (gold and silver). Men worked at remote locations year-round, living in boarding houses and coming off the mountains via tram bucket over long cable tram lines designed to carry the ore from the mine to the mill several thousand feet below. The entire town has been designated a National Historic Landmark and today is a favorite destination for train fans, history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.
