Katherine at the Sacramento River
The 375-mile Sacramento River has a long and rich history. Prior to
the arrival of Europeans, the river was home to several Native American
groups who thrived upon the salmon runs of the Sacramento and its tributaries
(and nearby acorns and deer). When Spanish explorers first came to the
river in 1808, they named it the "Jesus Maria." The river was renamed
El Rio del Sacramento when later explorers saw it for the first time
on the Day of the Holy Sacrament.
Starting in 1844 and for many years following, the river was used
to transport logs. It's changed dramatically since the construction
of the Shasta Dam in 1938 and the Red Bluff Diversion Dam in 1964. Here
Katherine shows some of the serenity of the Sacramento River. See how
serene she looks?!
